Maria Dorothea Hillbrick's Funeral - 1888 - Descent at her Funeral

Mrs. Hilbrick. a well-known and much respected lady who die last week, was interred on Sunday. The cortege which followed the remains to their last resting place in the Harkaway cemeterywas very long. The buria; service, which was all in German, was conducted by Dr. Wankie. Is it not a shade disrepectful to the English speaking friends of the deceased lady and her family that all should have been said on a to them, unknown language! I understand that the sectarian prejudices and bigotry on the part of the head of the Lutheran Church in Melbourne be accountable for this. I am informed that on of our most popular local preachers was asked to take part in the service in English, but that the Lutheran body to which Mrs. Hillbrick had been identified refused to officiate if such gentleman participated. Is not this a rather ?? exposition of "brotherly kindness" and "love one towards another" Surely party feeling and not Christ must be at the bottom of such conduct.
