MRS. HILLBRICK'S FUNERAL.
To the Editor of the S. B. and A. Journal.
Sir--My attention having been directed to a paragraph in your issue of the 6th inst., in regard to Mrs. Hillbrick's funeral, allow me to state you have been misinformed in the matter. So far from the English friends of. the family of the deceased lady who attended her funeral having been disrespectfully ignored, the Church of England Minister of Berwick was expressly requested to attend and perform part of the ceremony in English. He was unfortunately unable to attend. It is true that the suggested ministrations by the representative of the so-called "Disciples" were declined. But I need not defend the Lutheran Church or myself against the absurd accusation of bigotry in connection therewith. That sect's well known dealings with, and position towards, all the other Christian churches are defence enough. Thanking you for inserting this correction, I am, yours respectfully,
HERMANN HERLITZ.
Lutheran Parsonage, East Melbourne, 11th June.

Maria Dorothea Hillbrick's Funeral - 1888 - Descent at her Funeral
Maria Dorothea Hillbrick's Funeral - 1888 - Descent at her Funeral
Mrs. Hilbrick. a well-known and much respected lady who die last week, was interred on Sunday. The cortege which followed the remains to their last resting place in the Harkaway cemeterywas very long. The buria; service, which was all in German, was conducted by Dr. Wankie. Is it not a shade disrepectful to the English speaking friends of the deceased lady and her family that all should have been said on a to them, unknown language! I understand that the sectarian prejudices and bigotry on the part of the head of the Lutheran Church in Melbourne be accountable for this. I am informed that on of our most popular local preachers was asked to take part in the service in English, but that the Lutheran body to which Mrs. Hillbrick had been identified refused to officiate if such gentleman participated. Is not this a rather ?? exposition of "brotherly kindness" and "love one towards another" Surely party feeling and not Christ must be at the bottom of such conduct.
