Jessie Sarah (Neame) Hillbrick (1852-1927)
Born in Nelson New Zealand to John Edward Neame and Sarah (Pavey) Neame in 1852. Birth records do not indicate any given names.
Other research indicates that there was a "Helen Neame" born around the same time and may have been her sister or even a twin sister. No records of "Helen" has been found by the research in this web site.
Based on Jessie Sarah's marriage and death records we have assumed that the unnamed birth on 11 Dec 1852 was Jessie Sarah Neame.
Jessie was born in New Zealand and was married in Harkaway, Victoria.
It was always thought that Jessie Sarah arrived in Australia via the Gresham. On 30 Jun 1869 a Jessie Neame (spelt "Nerne" in omnline documents) arrived in Melbourne from Plymouth, England. She appears to have been traveling alone.
At the time Clipper Ships would travel with the trade winds from West to East. So, to get to Australia from New Zealand would most likely mean traveling around the globe by ship.
With this in mind and that the voyage from Plymouth to Australia took about 90-100 days and the the same to return to plymouth. Jessie Sarah Neame most likely left New Zealand in December 1868 or early depending on how long was spent in England for the next ship to Australia. Maybe a today of 200 days.
If the date of birth is correct then Jessie Sarah Neame would have been just 16 years old when commencing her journey.
Just consider the journey in a Clipper Ship traveling around Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope and then at the age of only 16 years and maybe without company.
